The Non-Adventures of Nutmeg

She has always been afraid of everything.  Yes; everything.  People, loud noises, vacuums, shoes, soft noises, mops, creaking stairs, etc.  You name it, she is scared of it.  So naturally, when the construction started in our kitchen, she took sanctuary under my parents' bed.   The shine of her pale green eyes was barely visible from within the darkness.  I looked at her from the outskirts of the bed, and our eyes locked.  I could see nothing but her eyes, and they never moved.  She was always alert, ready to retreat to the asylum that total darkness offered.  It appears to calm her. Darkness, an agitator of humans, and a soother of cats.

There is one characteristic that is common to all indoor cats, they always want to go outside. Nutmeg, like her four predecessors, is an indoor cat. All four of the cats that have come and gone had strove to escape the walls I call home. They lived by the doors of my house, waiting for an oblivious passerby to crack the door long enough for them to slip out. Nutmeg is different. She is a skittish cat, and is quite easily scared. As a result, she has no desire to venture beyond the walls of my house. I have tested this, too. I have opened the door as wide as possible with her standing next to me and she skittered away from the door, not through it. She is truly one of a kind. It is normal for a cat to yearn for the outdoors. So, by definition, Nutmeg is not normal. That's fine with me. I'm not normal by the definition put in place by society, so we fit perfectly together. Normal is too mainstream.

  1. When reading your post, I couldn't help but wonder why your cat's so afraid. I've noticed this a lot about cats. When they're afraid, they tend to hide, always alert like you say. I like how you described her as she was hiding especially since you created a mysterious tone. I also enjoyed reading your closing line :) Nice work.

  2. The words and comparisons you made gave me such a visualization of what the cat actually does. I have that problem too with my cats, but not as bad. They tend to scare off of the most minor things, but yet they are like best friends with my dogs (: what a plot twist! Anyways, I look forward to reading more. I loved the closing line as well, great job.

  3. I guess we can say she's a scaredy-cat hahaha. Anyways, really enjoyed reading that. I couldn't help but imagine my cat while reading that, mine's not really scared of much, but when she is scared, she takes shelter under my bed. Like everyone else, I also liked your closing line. Nice job, can't wait to learn more about your cat.

  4. As I was reading your blog I could picture the setting and your cats eyes glowing under his sanctuary. I don't own any cats but my dogs tend to go under my bed when they get scared and I try to get them out so they wont be so terrified. Dogs and cats aren't so different from each other when it comes to being scared. Great blog , keep it up!

  5. I feel the same way towards my cat. She is literally scared of everything, but the only thing, or I should say the only person she isn't afraid of is my step mom, her original owner. But other than her she is very scared of everything else.

  6. Why was or has she been afraid ? Did you rescue her or know anything? Usually I will think a cat would be lovable and distant. Which is pretty weird to think about. Anyways you gave some good description.
